DTV Converter information

I'm taking this from the comment section of the test post below to make it more visible:

Is it too early to buy a digital converter for my old tv's that are connected to a rooftop antenna? I understand that the Fed may run out of coupon money if I don't act now. If I do buy the converter now, will it still pick up the local Buffalo channels?

Larry, all of the major local stations are currently broadcasting in digital form and have been for several years. You can definitely get the converters now and put them to use right away. We have tried them out here at the station and they do the job well. Keep in mind that you will still need to keep your existing antenna. We have also tested them with an indoor type antenna (rabbit ears) and depending on your location, this might be adequate for your needs.

I'm trying to figure out if I need a converter or not. The only time I use my outdoor antenna is when my cable service goes out. How can I tell if my two TVs will work or not? I have a splitter on one TV so the signal is also transmitted to the other TV. If I need a converter will one be sufficient for both TVs?

As a cable subscriber you won't immediately need an HD television. It's our understanding that the cable companies must provide an analog signal that's compatible with the older TV sets for at least another two years. If your cable goes out, you will need a converter after next February 17th because what you pick up by your antenna will not be compatible with your older set. (I'm assuming here that you do not have an HD television.)

You can split the output of the converter to two sets. However, you will not be able to watch two different channels like you can with cable. The channel selected on the converter is what will be seen on each set. If you want to watch a different channel on each TV you'll need two converters.
